Virtual Workshop with NIA Staff: So You’re Applying for a GEMSSTAR

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS), in partnership with the American Federation for Aging Research Clinician-Scientists Trandisciplinary Aging Research Coordinating Center (AFAR Clin-STAR CC), and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), offered a Virtual Workshop with NIA Staff: "So You’re Applying for a GEMSSTAR"

Topics focused on those applying for a Grants for Early Medical and Surgical Specialists’ Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) Award, but are relevant to all early career investigators who are applying for funding including: grant-writing, the review process, resubmissions and professional/career development plans.

The diverse presentations by NIA staff included:

Clinician Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Paper Session

This Clinician Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Paper Session will present the latest peer-reviewed geriatrics research from four leading researchers in Gynecology, Nephrology, Oncology, and Trauma Surgery. Questions and answers to follow. Learning Objectives: (1) discuss new and original geriatrics research; (2) describe an emerging concept or new scientific focus in aging research; and (3) summarize the key findings of projects with relevance to care of older adults.

COVID-19 Vulnerability and Mortality in Nursing Homes: Why Systemic Changes are Needed Now

How can we better protect loved ones in long term care from COVID-19? In many states, nursing home patients account for 40% of COVID-19 related deaths. Drawing on front-line experience and published research, this webinar will examine strategies for lowering illness and death rates among this highly vulnerable population and propose immediate solutions and need for a national planning task force.

Succeeding in Aging Research During the Pandemic

Organized by the AGS Junior Faculty Special Interest Group and recorded July 10, 2020, this webinar discussed navigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on research, funding, finding a job, hiring staff, and general productivity. Moderators addressed pressing questions from junior faculty and how to navigate conducting research during the pandemic.
